Do the new DMCA exceptions make it legal to crack DVD security measures and copy entire DVDs?

Answer

After this recent Chronicle post we recieved this question numerous times.

Allowed:

  • Circumventing a DVD's content scrambling system (CSS)
  • Copying (aka "ripping) small portions or excerpts from the DVD

Not Allowed:

  • Copying (aka "ripping") the entire DVD

Please see "Digital Copyright Exemptions Benefit Educators, Filmmakers and Smartphone Owners" by George A. Pike, for a good explanation of this recent development. 

“And, any use that is not a fair use, such as ripping the entire DVD, remains both a copyright infringement and a violation of the DMCA.”
